As in much of Chablis, the Les Fourneaux Premier Cru vineyard is distinguished from the surrounding vineyards by its Kimmeridgian marl soils: a terroir that is found across Chablis and in the Champagne vineyards as well. This soil, made up of ancient marine fossils, is rocky and porous with a high limestone content, which is thought to contribute to the minerality of the resultant wines.
