The Story Behind the Wine:

Sassicaia, produced by Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri, Italy, is a pioneering Super Tuscan wine. The 1999 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The vineyards are situated on varied soils rich in limestone, marl, and clay, at altitudes between 80 and 400 meters above sea level. The 1999 growing season featured a cold winter, excellent spring weather, and a hot, dry summer, leading to ripe, healthy grapes with excellent flavor concentration. The harvest began in early September and lasted for about four weeks without interruption. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures, followed by malolactic fermentation in steel. The wine was aged for 23 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which were new, before bottling in October 2001.
