🇮🇹 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 2012

Experience the classic elegance of the 2012 Sassicaia from Tenuta San Guido, a benchmark Super Tuscan wine that exemplifies the excellence of Italian winemaking.

Critic Reviews and Scores:

  • James Suckling: 94 points. "The 2012 is a classic styled Sassicaia with wonderful freshness, firmness, and finesse. I loved the floral and currant aromas as well as the dense and compacted palate of dark fruits and fine tannins. It shows a beautiful suppleness that reminds me of the excellent 1997, 2001, or 2004."

  • Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 92 points. "From an early-ripening vintage, the 2012 Bolgheri Sassicaia shows bold lines and thick color concentration. It does exhibit a classic Sassicaia bouquet, but it does so minus that delicate floral embroidery that comes forth with such delight in 2013. This wine shows a harder, more determined edge."

Tasting Notes:

  • Color: Deep ruby red.

  • Nose: Floral and currant aromas with hints of saddle leather, caramel, forest floor, blackberries, and raspberries.

  • Palate: Dense and compacted palate of dark fruits and fine tannins, with a beautiful suppleness and freshness.

The Story Behind the Wine:

Sassicaia, produced by Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri, Italy, is a pioneering Super Tuscan wine. The 2012 vintage is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards are planted on plots with varied morphological characteristics, including a strong presence of limestone, rich in rocks and clay, located at altitudes between 100 and 300 meters above sea level, facing West - South/West. The 2012 growing season was characterized by a long, cold winter, followed by a hot summer with considerable fluctuations in temperature between night and day, which prevented water stress in the plants. The hand-picking of the grapes began in early September with Cabernet Franc, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, ending in early October. The harvest yielded healthy grapes with regular veraison and no millerandage.

Pairing Suggestions:

This distinguished red pairs wonderfully with:

  • Grilled Meats: Enhances flavors of grilled steak or lamb.

  • Aged Cheeses: Complements mature cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino.

  • Game Dishes: Pairs well with venison or wild boar stews.
