Critic Reviews and Scores:
-
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 97 points. "The 2008 Sassicaia is a rich, deep wine imbued with notable class in its black cherries, plums, grilled herbs, minerals, and smoke. The 2008 is a decidedly buttoned-up, firm Sassicaia that is currently holding back much of its potential. Readers who can afford to wait will be treated to a sublime wine once this settles down in bottle. Muscular, firm tannins frame the exquisite finish in this dark, implosive Sassicaia."
-
James Suckling: 97 points. "This is the best young Sassicaia in years. It's the new 1988, which was great, and sometimes better than the legendary 1985. What incredible aromas here with blueberries, spices, licorice, plums. Graphite too. Subtle and complex. Full and silky with a beautiful texture of fine tannins and an ultra-fine finish. So beautiful now but will be much better in 2015."
Tasting Notes:
-
Color: Intense, concentrated, and deep ruby color.
-
Nose: Complex aromas of black cherries, ripe dark plums, and blackberries with hints of chocolate, tobacco, spices, flowers, and cedar.
-
Palate: Dry, beautifully balanced with medium+ intensity, medium+ acidity, and medium tannins. Flavors are a recall of the nose with extra flavors of cassis, pencil shavings, and leather hints. The finish is great and persistent.
The Story Behind the Wine:
Sassicaia, produced by Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri, Italy, is a pioneering Super Tuscan wine. The 2008 vintage is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards are planted on plots with varied morphological characteristics, including a strong presence of limestone, rich in rocks and clay, located at altitudes between 100 and 300 meters above sea level, facing West - South/West. The wine was aged in French oak barriques for 24 months, followed by a period of refinement in glass before release.
