Tasting Notes:

  • Color: Deep garnet with ruby reflections.
  • Nose: A captivating bouquet of mature black fruits, hints of black pepper, dried figs, and subtle coffee and cacao notes from extended oak aging.
  • Palate: Full-bodied with silky tannins, delivering rich flavors of blackberries, plums, cloves, and tobacco. The wine’s low acidity and long, lingering finish give it an elegant complexity.
  • Finish: Long and smooth, with a perfect balance between ripe fruit and oaky notes.

The Story Behind the Wine: Founded in 1898, Bodegas Corral is steeped in history, being located directly on the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), one of the world’s most famous pilgrimage routes. The ruins of the San Juan de Acre Pilgrim’s Hospital, built in the 12th century, can still be seen from the vineyards, serving as a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage. Pilgrims traveling through Rioja helped foster a unique winemaking culture by exchanging stories and experiences, which continues to influence the wines produced today. The Don Jacobo Gran Reserva 2010, made from a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, and 5% Mazuelo, embodies this legacy.

Pairing Suggestions:

  • Red Meat: Ideal with roast lamb or grilled steaks, complementing the richness of the meat.
  • Cheese: Pair with aged Manchego or Idiazábal, balancing the wine’s mature fruit and oak flavors.

Winemaking & Terroir: The vines for this Gran Reserva are planted in clay-limestone soils, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the wine’s mineral depth. Aged for 36 months in American oak barrels and another 36 months in bottle, this wine is a reflection of traditional Rioja winemaking at its finest.
